Review from class (the parts I was there for…)
-A person can become a vehicle
-Our pattern can be, and probably will be organic, unintentional
-Possibly find a shape from connected significant places
To clarify: the initial “sketch” toward the emblem is not (just/simply) an image.
Essential at this stage: provisional items for categories (4-5?), at least 2-3 plus image for Workshop; see Ulmer’s “Emblem” web pages above, as well as “Office” #2 (p.324) note that the group referenced today.
We’ll work practically on our emblems during “Studio” Thursday; in order to optimize value of our time (and arrive prepared), important to begin work on your wide image (in “sketch” form of blog entry). Please focus on personalizing your elements for the “recipe” first (tonight), and then add media (tomorrow by class time).
reminder: Emblem poetics are explicitly presented in Chp. 9:
— Baroque Era (p.249-50) // see also Heraldry
— — Relay? Montréal shield (9-10 aesthetic figures / components)

(Relay, as we’re not making a Coat of Arms but an emblem. Contrast = logo & icon.)
— Remake (p.254)
— Template (p.267-8)
→ Noon Star (Emblem) (p.271-6) — poetics for web examples above.
Also to clarify:
I’ve noticed some recent confusion between “emblem” (wide image) & “themata” (image motif/pattern).
Remember that we’re now trying to compose our wide images, as part 1 of the final project (“widesite”) — to then use as “compass” (?) for composing assemblage expression to address second task (most importantly).
Crucial to review textbook and to maintain distinctions; for example, “Noon Star” mystory has an emblem, while Einstein’s compass & my spiral/cochlea are “themata” (pp.19-20).
Also review “image of wide scope” pp.18-21, 42.
(General tip: review Chapters 1 & 2, selective reading?)
Self-reflexive “quiz” to see what extent to which you need review:
I remarked to a student after class how “creating our emblem should be the easy part” (because it is familiar in the “organic” sense — it’s me!).
→ Your reaction to my statement should help you realize whether you need to review (and to ask specific Qs by email and in class Thurs-Fri), just like “barometer” of Mon-Wed. review sessions (whether you were lost/confused or easily recognizing the group members’ topics and my “framing” of their points….)
