    Challenge:
    What reflexive knowledge can we acquire about our role in the paradigm in which we are situated?



Project 1: Triangulating Position within Family and Career Discourse

    Due: 20-Feb; 1000 words, 25 points


  • Organization:

      Create new Page, then sub-pages (minimum 3) for each component —
      Part I, Part II, Poetics

  • Form/Design Criteria

    • Images required, including at least one original / manipulated (“photoshopped”).
    • Attempt, apply, emulate specific techniques from at least four Relay sources
      (leave implicit, and then identify directly on Poetics page)
    • Organize text as “fragments”;
      — include a variety of styles, as “hybrid discourse” (critical + creative thought-modes).
    • Use multiple media, “expressive formatting,” and links in entries.
    • Revise & Edit “for publication”
      (i.e. copy-edit, “proofread” for correct prose; revise for efficient style)



    Parts I & II —— from Internet Invention:

    Part I: Career Discourse

      “Make a website documenting an important discovery, or a (founding) invention,
      in your career domain” (21)

    • “The goal is invention—the stage of gathering the materials with which to work. Think of this site as a documentation, a curated display of details related to a discovery, invention, and a figure responsible” (21-2)
    • This “resembles a conventional research topic, except that rather than [forming] an argument, you are considering the material in terms of your identification with it: an event in a field of knowledge used as a feature in a self-portrait.” (22)

  • Required: 2 sources (at least one scholarly); cite any material referenced and quoted.
      » Note: Treat information just as you would in a standard class assignment (essay, project): do not copy/paste any material that you find online (academic honesty guidelines). Direct quotes need page numbers, while paraphrases can have author/publication. Absolutely do not use info from Wikipedia (or similar user-generated sites) — which are never appropriate for academic assignments!



    Part II: Home and Family

      “Make a website documenting a scene that sticks in your memory
      from the childhood years of your family life.”
       

      • Find “the image pattern we seek for the widesite in discourse materials generated around problem issues in each” (86)


      » Note:   include at least one instance of an “image motif” somewhere in the overall project; this is any concrete detail that appears in both the Career and Family dimensions of your popcycle.

      — Not necessarily “visual” (despite phrasing of “image motif”), but definitely a concrete detail, particular trait, item from the respective “databases” (career and family). Should be similar to the level of specificity we’ve examined/discussed in most of our Relay texts (hint: review your inventory…)
      — As for “motif,” need not be an “emergent pattern,” but only two occurrences; leave implicit, without identifying or explaining. Also, not a perfect correspondence or artificial connection, but chora logic (or “endocept”) — “organic” co-incidence in both dimensions, part of your “documenting” the invention/discovery and of your memory; (might realize after writing both, and then add to the one Part lacking the incidence.)

    Poetics page (~300 words, of 1000 total)

      Describe the process of composing, explicitly stating your method and rationale; this includes the specific lessons from “Relay” sources (4 min.), as well as the theory and instructions from Ulmer (chp. 1-4). Points should be precise and concise, (yet more descriptive than “inventory” notes), identifying particular items/aspects of your project with connection to textbook and relays; most important is your rationale, which explicitly describes inventive process and “hybrid discourse” with regard to method and aims of the course thus far.

    Hello class, this is the follow up from group one presentation today as we covered chapter 1 of Ulmer’s Intenet Invention, Y Tu Mami Tambien, and Sunshine 69. Here are some questions to keep in mind when creating our widesite: Do we want to have an interactive website for people to comment their own experiences, and how effective would this be in our widesite, since its for us? How effective was this approach to Sunsine 69? Some of the speific points of Sunshine69 are its hidden navigaion and interactive nature.
    -Do we want to have the most important element of the site hidden, because if we do will people “the audience” really take what we want them to take from the site?
    -Do we want to have our site as a narrative of our experiences, like a story line or play, kind of similar to Sunshine 69 or have the people in our memories portrayed as charcters in a novel?
    -We need to first decide which element of the popcycle we want to address as it relates to our career, and the audience.
    - How do we want to organize the movement of the site, through images, language, time, topography, slides, movies, sound, mapping or simply by rhetoric?
