Week 5
- * start developing/drafting Project 2
M 8/4 Focus/Discuss: Project 2 — multimodal composing (theory & practice)
- media forms & networked platforms for expression of “digital subject experience”?
→ including ideas from Proposal & culture observations (invention “relays”)
— review of key ideas/terms toward new composing (assemblage expression)- Review Apparatus Theory — Identity experience in Electracy?
- Class Discussion Notes (G. Doc)
- Review Apparatus Theory — Identity experience in Electracy?
+ Kimoto video: “Rhizomatic Space” (2010)
-
» Optional reading: Amerika, “Excerpts From‘Portrait Of The VJ’” Fibreculture 2005
T 8/5 Hodgson video: “A Post-Production Turn: New Media, New Practice, New Ontology” (2014)
Activity: Sampling “Personal Database” Materials (Exercise 3 & Project 2 warm-up)
- → Preparation: compile/collect media, text, “characters,” scenes, details etc.
for “Screen Self-Portrait” from all personal databases:
autobio/family, community/social, school/career field, entertainment/culture
» in-class activity instructions G. Doc
Due (11pm): Exercise 3 Instructions Page
Protip for Exercise 3 & Project 2
Composition Logic (from theory & objects of study):
leave yourself out (explicitly), in favor of expressing with database elements (“readymade” stories, characters, settings, concrete details).
The DJ or Film Director is responsible for arrangement—sequence; focalization & juxtaposition—while remaining absent, in terms of voice (articulation).
The goal (and method) is to “weave” an assemblage of heterogeneous details, voices, and stories/references from your Personal Databases, in style of “sampling” and re-purposing;
multimodal composing as new form of expression —
not to assert your opinion / interpretation (judgment-Orality, analysis-Literacy)
but to present (perform) the atmosphere within which you are situated
(mediated identity, subject experience in network ecology).
» Sites/Platforms (optional alternative / in addition to WordPress) for Exercise 3 & Project 2
— others suggested?
apps / sites from Project 1 media work
» Image Editing:
Pixlr
** Pixlr Grabber (extension) — image capture
Jing Project — capture & annotate screen images
creating your own GIFs:
» Screen capture & recording for video:
SnagIt (Chrome Extension)
Screenr
EZVid * recommended
CamStudio
— check others / similar on this page
— post suggestions as well!
— more free composing software/sites
» Audio Editing: Audacity
» Video Editing
→ KeepVid (“download streaming videos”) *PROTIP
recommended: free/CreativeCommons/public domain videos at InternetArchive
— platform for compiling vidoes (and your own audio, including “voiceover”) and publishing/hosting: WeVideo
» video I made — expression of mediated identity and digital subjectivity experience — using
1. Audacity
— both to edit (“trim”) and then sequence tracks (starting with ~80 clips)
2. KeepVid (save streaming videos)
— as well as downloading free/CreativeCommons/public domain videos at InternetArchive (recommended)
3. Win.MovieMaker (quickly “trim” & speed-up vids; ~60 clips)
4. WeVideo
— sequence vids (with transitions) & audio tracks
note this is 3 parts compiled as one (thus, about 2-3x longer than necessary) — included here only to show A.) use of free software (although I do have WeVideo Premium through CU)
and B.) extent of “abstract” composing, performing a “theme” or idea
— using readymade material (mostly films & “found footage,” drawn from & inspired by Personal Databases (not all 4 explicitly), “re-purposed” as personal expression…
