continuing research from Wednesday tutorial, starting toward project 1

F 06-Feb    Research Log (create, share, update)

  • Share Google Doc (use copy of template) — by 3pm
  • Counts as blog entry / hybrid participation activity
  • Search several databases for project components
via CULibrary: Art Full Text, ARTbibliographies Modern, Proquest Art History, International bibliography of theatre & dance, International index to the performing arts, Film and television literature index; Oxford Art Online (“Includes the Grove Dictionary of Art, the best source for encyclopedia entries on artists, styles, periods, materials or techniques.” + Encyclopedia of Aesthetics + The Oxford Companion to Western Art)

» Research management: use Google Docs (for Log) plus Zotero (or another app like Medeley or Evernote; others?)

Initial Research (focused search & browse) areas/categories:

    — artform, medium, technology (hardware + software/process); historical context;
artist (example), specific artworks, aesthetic movement/trends

M 09-Feb    Due: Annotated Bibliography

Annotated Bibliography

5 points; due Monday 2/09; submit doc in D2L

» Research for Project 1:
annotations of 5 scholarly sources (e.g. academic articles) toward analytic essay.

  • Include full citation for each entry
  • Annotations = 3 sentences (min./max.)
Discuss the resource concisely and precisely:

    — Concisely state the main point of the article
(can summarize briefly; restate the main point/idea in your words)

    — Identify the most useful and/or unique quality of this source
    (“evaluative” in this sense)

    — What is the contribution/value to your research project? (most important)
Propose how you might/plan to use this source in your essay
    (be specific, even if speculating)

optional: discuss any limitations or concerns; if it is suitable/relevant to your essay (qualify if a “nontraditional” source); or/and what more you might need to research subsequently

  • All discussion should be your commentary (no need to quote author) — considering the source material for this purpose/assignment; reflecting thoughtful and focused research (information literacy).

suggested: try including a variety of sources, addressing several of our research areas/categories (rather than 5 about 1 topic like “medium” or “historical context”).
Maybe one source addresses multiple areas? (e.g. artist + specific works) Be sure to identify this in your annotation.
